Torry Brown was wrapping up a conversation with a visitor right before gathering his team for the opening tip Tuesday afternoon and his parting words were something along the lines of “I hope we can keep it within 30.”
Most of the time that type of comment would be dismissed as a throw-away line of self-deprecation, something a coach might say to keep things light or low-ball the expectations. But this time, the Anniston coach said when reminded of his words, he wasn’t joking.
“I was serious; I was serious,” he said. “We have an issue that’s really not an in-season fix: We don’t shoot the ball well. I think tonight we hit one 3 and probably took 16 or 17, so when you don’t shoot the ball well you’re going to struggle and if you can’t make it a half-court game and then beat the other team up chances are the outcome is not going to be good.
“We’re in one of those spurts where we’re just not very good. It is what it is right now.”
And that’s not a very good feeling to have with the area tournament right around the corner, and the Bulldogs’ 2-v-3 game with White Plains is as big a game for their state title defense as there will be in the state.
“We just hadn’t had a chance, and even now, we still don’t have any chemistry because guys have just been in and out, in and out,” Brown said. “Once we think we got it figured out then somebody else comes or somebody else goes out and we’re having to change it. At this late in the season you are who are you are and we’re a .500 team. That’s what we are.”
It probably wouldn’t have mattered how well the Bulldogs might have shot it as sharp as the Bears were.
When you play Plainview you know you’re going to get two things: A team that passes the ball so well it makes your head spin and one that shoots the eyes out of the 3.
The Bears hit 14 3-pointers in the game, eight in the second quarter as they built a 17-point halftime lead. Six players hit at least one, with half of them hitting three apiece.
Anniston, as Brown correctly recalled, made only one, a bomb by C.J. Munford late in the first quarter.
“I don’t know the percentages, but when we got to going there we moved the ball – great passes, great feet, great shots,” Plainview coach Robi Coker said. “The guys who needed to take them were taking them. It was fun to watch.”
Plainview’s Luke Smith led all scorers with 23 points. Antonio Kite led Anniston with 15 points, including a spectacular basket in the second quarter in which he dribbled underneath the basket and while moving forward shot it backwards towards the goal. The ball bounced high off the rims several times before dropping through the hoop.
The win was Plainview’s first in three tries against teams from Calhoun County this season. The Bears previously lost to both Calhoun County Tournament finalists – Oxford and Jacksonville – but are 15-5 against county teams since 2014-15.
“I’m an old Jax State guy, I love Calhoun County, a lot of guys down here I respect,” Coker said. “Any chance we get an opportunity to play a good team we’re going to take it. I’m glad these guys continue to play us year in and year out.”
