Oxford, AL – In a incident that unfolded around 11:35 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 12, a multi-vehicle crash on Airport Road near Oxford has resulted in the loss of a young life. The victim, identified as 22-year-old Cristian Soto from Oxford, was critically injured in the collision.
The tragic sequence of events began when the 2017 Ford Fusion driven by Soto collided head-on with a 2004 Peterbilt tractor-trailer operated by 63-year-old Douglas E. Smith from Dakota City, Neb. The impact of the initial collision was severe, leading to further complications as the Ford subsequently struck a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pickup driven by 21-year-old Jordy M. Perez, also from Oxford.
Following the crash, emergency responders swiftly transported Soto to UAB Hospital in Birmingham for medical attention. Despite efforts to save him, Soto succumbed to his injuries, and he was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
The location of the crash was on Airport Road, situated less than one mile west of Oxford, within Calhoun County. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division is actively investigating the incident, and no additional details have been released at this time.
