Calhoun County, AL – The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office was notified by the railroad that a large train derailment occurred at approximately 6:45 this morning in the Iron City area. Emergency workers responded to the scene to ensure the area was not a danger to the surrounding area. Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant, Falon Hurst, advised, “There is not a hazmat danger and there were no reports of any injuries.” Lt. Hurst went on to say, “There are multiple train cars off the track and a large section of track is severely damaged.”
Due to the location of the derailment, there is not a traffic hazard for drivers in the area, but curious people should stay out of the area due to safety concerns. At this time there is no indication as to the cause of the crash and the National Transportation Safety Board will be conducting the investigation into what caused the train to derail.
