Anna Taylor knew her way around the Jacksonville gym when she returned to her high school alma mater with the Donoho volleyball team Tuesday night, but she admitted it was a little strange walking in as a member of the opposing team. Taylor returned to Jacksonville for the first time as head coach to face her old coach and her old team and got the best of the reunion, sweeping both the Lady Golden Eagles and Piedmont in the tri-match.

The Lady Falcons beat Jacksonville 25-23, 25-16, and Piedmont 25-13, 25-12. They are 7-1 on the season. In the third match of the night, Piedmont swept Jacksonville 25-20, 25-23.

“I definitely remembered the gym from when I played there, so I was ready to walk into what I remember, but when I went downstairs to take the opposing bench it was a very different feeling,” said Taylor, a 2001 Jacksonville grad. “It was almost like I don’t recognize this being on the other side. “I thought it’d be very familiar and it was when I was on the top, then when I walked down on the court it was different, that’s when it sort of set in.”

The Donoho coach might have had some high anxiety going into the match, but it didn’t translate to her team. Playing with what she called “very low energy when we started out,” the Lady Falcons were locked in a right first set. They trailed consistently by three points for a while, then tied the set at 18, 19 and 20. They led 24-23 before closing it out on Jacksonville’s serve. [*** read more]

Alexandria sweeps pair on road

Alexandria kept the streak going with a pair of sweeps over Parker (25-11, 25-5) and host Ramsay (25-19, 25-13). The Lady Cubs improved to 7-0 and have won 17 straight sets to open the season.

PV stays unbeaten with home sweep

Lily Henry recorded 17 kills and seven kills and Maddie Schwabe had 14 kills and 14 assists as Pleasant Valley remained undefeated with a pair of sweeps over Saks and Springville. The Lady Raiders won the second set against Springville 26-24 to keep that match from going to the tiebreaker.

“We didn’t execute as well in Set 2, but the girls kept their composure and just kept putting one foot in front of the other until they finished,” PV coach Dana Bryant said.

Oxford gets White Plains again

Abbie Mitchell had seven kills and Payton Brooks as Oxford beat White Plains for the second time in four days. The Lady Jackets (2-4) beat the Lady Wildcats in five sets Saturday at Pleasant Valley.

“We just played together as a team,” Lady Jackets assistant coach Rachel Poe said. “We had some people in new positions and the girls moved better.”

Ohatchee opens strong

Jorda Crook scored 28 kills and had nine aces to lead a well-balanced attack that helped Ohatchee get its season off to a rousing start . The Lady Indians bounced back from a 27-25 loss in the first set to beat Sand Rock 2-1 and won a 25-23 25-23 second set from Glencoe to sweep that match.

Alanah Fitch had a full box score with 10 kills, 22 assists and four aces. Ellie Carden had 24 digs and four aces. Gracyn Snow and Rebecca Henderson had seven kills apiece and Hannah Fitch had 19 assists and nine digs.
