Race winners Nelson of Pleasant Valley, Conn of White Plains lead their squads to team titles

By East Alabama Sports Today

Pleasant Valley’s Cayden Nelson and White Plains’ Maddyn Conn were first across the line in their respective races Thursday night and led their teams to division victories in the season-opening Wildcat Twilight cross country race at White Plains.

Nelson, a junior, came back to where it all began and was the overall boys winner while leading the Raiders to the boys small school title. The former White Plains runner ran the course in 17:35.39, nine seconds ahead of large school boys winner Joe Stevens of Ashville.

“He’s been with Brad (Hood) longer than he was with me; he’s been up there several years,” White Plains coach John Moore said. “He’s just a special young man. It’s quite remarkable how he pushes and believes in himself.”

Conn, a freshman, was the overall girls winner in 20:57.41, 22 seconds ahead of small school girls winner Katie Giles of Glencoe.

“She just had a heck of a race today,” Moore said of Conn. “Her and (White Plains teammate) Anna (Strickland) are stride for stride in races and practice. She just ran her race.”

Strickland was third in the large school race, fourth overall.

Lincoln and Ashville tied in the large school boys team race with 42 points, but the Golden Bears won the tiebreaker with No. 6 runner Seth Lett’s 21st-place finish. Glencoe won the small school girls title.
