Two Calhoun County-area high school seniors announced as recipients of the Suzy Spiceland Michelson Memorial Scholarship

Anniston, AL – Two Calhoun County-area high school seniors have been announced as recipients of the Suzy Spiceland Michelson Memorial Scholarship, a cash scholarship sponsored by the Anniston Runners Club. The scholarship is designed for school cross-country and track & field team members, and is awarded annually to two graduating high school seniors who demonstrate academic merit, as well as extracurricular participation in both service and athletic opportunities.

This year, the scholarship was awarded to Keziah Mickler and Grayson Johnson. Both Mickler and Johnson will receive $500 as part of the Suzy Spiceland Michelson Memorial Scholarship.

Mickler is a graduating senior at Oxford High School, where she is a member of the varsity track team, an inductee of the National Honor Society, and is involved with the Oxford High School Student Council as its Vice President. She is currently deciding between three colleges to attend, and will major in nursing.

Johnson is a graduating senior at Walter Wellborn High School, where he has been on the track & field team for six years. He also participates in varsity basketball and football, and has served as a Parliamentarian on the Student Council. Johnson plans to attend Lyon College in Arkansas, where he will major in civil engineering.

The Suzy Spiceland Michelson Memorial Scholarship was established in 2017 to honor the memory of Suzy Spiceland Michelson, who passed away in 2016. She was a librarian at Constantine Elementary School and a frequent marathon runner. The Anniston Runners Club, of which Michelson was a member, has sponsored the scholarship annually to benefit young scholar athletes in the Calhoun County area.

According to the Anniston Runners Club’s website, their mission statement is as follows: “At the Anniston Runners Club, our vision is to promote, foster and encourage a positive running culture among our youth. Our mission also entails the support of aspiring athletes and the nurturing of their sporting potential. We are committed to promoting the immense health benefits of running and mentoring new athletes to achieve their dreams.”
