Washington D.C. – Six U.S. Senators, representing both major political parties, have jointly introduced a resolution urging the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to formally investigate allegations of sexual violence and torture perpetrated by Hamas during and after the October 7 terrorist attack on Israel. The resolution comes in response to a recent U.N. report citing “reasonable grounds” for such acts, prompting calls for accountability.
The Senators, including Katie Britt (R-Ala.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), and Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), have emphasized the gravity of these allegations and urged the international community to take action against the perpetrators.
According to the resolution, the Senators call upon the U.S. to push for an official investigation by the UNSC into the reported sexual violence and torture. They also demand accountability for those responsible for these acts during and after the October 7 attack.
In response to this resolution, Senator Britt stated, “The reprehensible, barbaric acts of sexual violence committed by Hamas terrorists on October 7 have no place in our world and must be unequivocally and universally condemned.” She emphasized the importance of standing firm against such atrocities and advocating for justice for the victims.
The resolution, co-sponsored by Senators from various states and party affiliations, reflects bipartisan concern over the reported acts of sexual violence and torture. It underscores the Senators’ commitment to upholding human rights and condemning all forms of violence and terrorism.
Senator Britt has been vocal in her support for Israel, particularly in response to the October 7 attack. She has previously led bipartisan efforts to condemn Hamas for using sexual violence as a weapon of war and has called for action from the United Nations to address these crimes.
Following the attack, Senator Britt visited Israel with a bipartisan delegation to express unequivocal support for the country. Additionally, she has supported multiple resolutions condemning Hamas and has advocated for sanctions on Iran to disrupt its financing of terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah.
The resolution introduced by these Senators underscores the urgency of addressing allegations of sexual violence and torture in conflict zones and reflects a bipartisan commitment to advocating for justice and accountability on the global stage.
