Washington D.C. – Four U.S. senators, spanning across party lines, have come together to introduce a groundbreaking piece of legislation aimed at bolstering maternal health care services in rural America. Senators Katie Britt (R-Ala.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), and Tina Smith (D-Minn.) jointly announced the introduction of the Rural Obstetrics Readiness Act, which seeks to offer vital support for rural health care facilities to provide urgent obstetric care.

“I’m proud to join Senator Hassan in leading this important bipartisan legislation to support moms and empower rural hospitals with the resources needed to provide quality care to women in their communities,” said Senator Britt, echoing the sentiments of her colleagues.

The proposed bill aims to address a pressing issue affecting numerous rural communities across the nation – the lack of access to obstetric care. By creating training programs, providing federal grants for equipment upgrades, and developing teleconsultation services, the legislation seeks to equip rural hospitals and doctors with the tools needed to handle obstetric emergencies effectively.

“No matter where new and expecting moms live, they should be able to access quality health care,” emphasized Senator Smith, underlining the urgent need to bridge the health care gap in rural areas.

In Alabama alone, over a third of counties are designated as “maternity care deserts,” underscoring the severity of the issue. Senator Britt, who has been a staunch advocate for health care initiatives, highlighted the alarming statistics, noting that the state faces challenges like hospital closures and high maternal mortality rates.

Throughout her tenure, Senator Britt has championed various health care measures, including bills focused on expanding telehealth services and addressing the affordability of insulin. Additionally, she has spearheaded efforts to improve mental health care for youth and enhance access to breast cancer diagnostic tests.

Most recently, Senator Britt secured significant funding in the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act to modernize medical equipment and enhance rural health services in Alabama, demonstrating her ongoing commitment to improving health care infrastructure.

As the Rural Obstetrics Readiness Act gains traction, it stands as a beacon of bipartisan collaboration aimed at ensuring that all expecting mothers, regardless of their geographical location, receive the quality care they deserve. With its potential to make a meaningful impact on maternal health outcomes in rural America, the legislation represents a significant step forward in addressing health care disparities and promoting equity in access to care.
