Flags Half Staff

Washington, D.C. — On Thursday, May 15, 2025, United States flags will be flown at half-staff across the nation in observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day. This day falls during National Police Week, recognized from May 11 through May 17, 2025.

Peace Officers Memorial Day pays tribute to law enforcement officers who have lost their lives or been disabled in the line of duty. The half-staff observance is a symbolic gesture of respect and remembrance for these individuals and their service to the public.

Police Week provides an opportunity to acknowledge the dedication of law enforcement professionals and the challenging responsibilities they undertake to ensure public safety. Communities across the country often participate in ceremonies, vigils, and educational events to recognize the work and sacrifices of officers at all levels of law enforcement.

The observance was established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962 and is marked each year by a presidential proclamation directing flags on all public buildings and grounds to be flown at half-staff on May 15.

Citizens, businesses, and organizations are also encouraged to participate in this observance to honor the memory and legacy of those who have served and sacrificed in law enforcement.
