Piedmont, AL – The Piedmont Police Department has provided updated information regarding the handling of the hogs involved in an incident that resulted in a fatality and an injury at a small farm on Bramlett Road.
As reported earlier, on Monday, February 17, 2025, officers and medics responded to a call regarding a deceased male. Upon arrival, they found a loose hog and a broken section of fencing. The victim, identified as 51-year-old Steven Kyle Satterfield of Piedmont, was found under a vehicle. Authorities believe he sustained injuries from the hogs and retreated beneath the vehicle, where he passed away. The cause of death remains under investigation pending a forensic examination.
In the days following the incident, the handling and custody of the hogs have been addressed. Two hogs suspected of causing injuries were removed from the property and secured at a local veterinary clinic. Due to environmental conditions, two additional hogs remained on the property but were contained inside an inoperable trailer while the fence was repaired.
After reviewing state livestock laws, the Alabama Department of Agriculture advised that law enforcement does not have the authority to determine the animals’ fate. As a result, custody of all four hogs was released to Mr. Satterfield’s family. The family opted not to return the two hogs from the veterinary clinic to the property.
On Thursday, February 20, 2025, an individual sustained injuries while feeding the two remaining hogs. Due to their aggressive behavior, the family decided to euthanize them on-site to prevent further harm. The injured individual was transported for medical treatment, though their identity has not been disclosed.
The Piedmont Police Department asks the public to respect the family’s privacy and refrain from spreading unverified information during this difficult time. The investigation remains ongoing.
