Florence, AL – While baseball team vies for state title, and softball team eyes its state tourney opener, Alexandria’s girls’ golf team emerges with lead after state tournament’s first round

Alexandria just might bring home two blue maps Tuesday and three this week.

The baseball team won Monday’s Game 1 of the Class 5A title series Monday, and the best-of-3 series concludes Tuesday. The softball team opens state-tourney play Wednesday.

The girls’ golf team goes into Tuesday’s final round of the state Class 4A-5A golf tournament in the lead at RTJ-The Shoals.

The Valley Cubs shot 40 over par as a team in Monday’s first round and lead West Point by nine strokes. Gulf Shores is 16 strokes off of the pace, and St. Paul’s is 26 strokes back.

Alexandria seeks its second team state title in girls’ golf and first since 2008. Lauren Sechrest won medalist honors in 2022, and Jordan Gregoria was co-medalist in 2014.

Current Alexandria assistant coach Brenard Howard coached Alexandria’s boys and girls in 2008, and the girls won their state title at RTJ-The Shoals. The Valley Cubs led by seven strokes after the first round in 2008.

Jasmine Stokes shot an 11-over-par 83 to lead the Valley Cubs at 83. She’s in fourth place, 10 strokes back Kylee Lynn, of Beauregard.

Alexandria’s Nevaeh Foster, Howard’s grand daughter, stands in fifth place at 85, and Avery Prickett shot 88 to be tied for eighth.

Marlee Hedgpeth is tied for 12th at 93.

Alexandria makes tradition of painting a “ball on the wall” in Larry R. Ginn Gymnasium for state-championship teams. That wall could show a new baseball, softball and golf ball soon.

“It would mean a lot to me,” Alexandria coach Craig Kiker said. “I’m an Alexandria guy, and that’s where I went to school. There’s nothing bigger, to me, than for us to win a state championship in whatever.

“I hope we’re about to win one in baseball. The softball girls have a great shot. I’d like to see us get three of them this year.”

Boys

White Plains’ Sawyer Edwards shot a 10-over 82 on Monday and stands tied for 17th. Haleyville’s Hudson Lawson shot a 5-under 67 and leads the field by six strokes.
