Harrison Hughston was one of the lucky ones. The Anniston golfer was one of 81 players who got to play a complete round in the 106th Alabama State Amateur at Bent Brook Golf Course Wednesday before play was suspended for the day.

The remaining 75 players will resume their round at 7:30 a.m. Thursday. Round Two will begin at 8:30.

Hughston had the best round among the Calhoun County players in the field. He got around in even-par 71. His round was highlighted by an eagle on 17. He also had two birdies.

Jacob LeCroy, coming off his runaway win in the Anniston Country Club Invitational, is even par through 13 holes. He was 2-under on the back nine when play was suspended.

Kenny Okins is 3-over through 11 and Sawyer Edwards completed his opening round with aa 7-over 78.

The start to the morning wave was delayed until 8:30 a.m. due to heavy rain during the early morning and subsequent course conditions. Play was suspended at 1:45 p.m. due to lightning. It resumed at 4:10 and carried on until 7:25, which the horn sounded again due to lightning in the area.

Trey Rouse of Homewood stands at the top of the leaderboard, firing six-under thru 9. Max Johnson of Lillian and former Anniston resident Jackson King are both 5-under with several holes to play.

Eric Boutwell of Russellville is the leader in the clubhouse at 4-under 67. [*** read more]
