Weaver City Council Meeting Give Update on the Splash Pad and Upcoming Events

Weaver City Council

Weaver, AL – Weaver held their regularly scheduled works sessions and City Council Meeting on July 11th.

Work Session

Mayor Clendenning officially introduced the new Public Works Director, Johnathan Ingram, to the council. Mr. Ingram shared that he has been in the field since 1986 and has worked at Piedmont, Anniston, and Calhoun County and is now proud to add Weaver to that list. He also noted that since he has started this position the city has passed there ADEM annual water inspection. The tank is in good shape and the fencing needs a few minor repairs.

Chief Bush noted two proposals on the agenda tonight. The first is for a Tahoe for fiscal year 2023 that was approved previously. It is now time for the Mayor to sign the financing paperwork because the vehicle is almost ready. The second proposal is for a Dodge Charger that will be for fiscal year 2024. This car is currently on the lot and is available at a reduced cost if the council signs the agreement now. The vehicle may come into possession of Weaver PD during this current year, but will be the allotted new vehicle for FY24. Chief Bush also noted that of the six vehicles the PD currently has, three are paid off and 2 will be paid off this year. The Mayor made a request to look into paying cash for the new Charger instead of financing to save the city money.

Chief Bunn updated the council on the list he is compiling for building demolition. He currently has four to be considered and would like the council to send any other addresses they would like him to look at. Also at the meeting was Ms. Roy with the East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission. She offered any assistance to help locate additional buildings as well.

Councilman Burns shared that he had received complaints about a house near the Elementary School with extremely tall grass. He wanted to make sure code enforcement was aware.

Councilman McRae wanted to followup on the state of the pier at Angel Lake (aka Buckhorn Lake). Mr. Ingram did confirm that the barricades have been removed. He suggested several temporary options to keep the pier from being used and will also get an estimate to fix it.

Councilmembers Bowles, and Summerlin did not have any additional matters to bring up.

Mayor Clendenning noted he has received additional interest in the property the city acquired through a lawsuit last year. He wanted to get the council’s feedback on a selling price point. The general agreement was any price that was above what the city paid would be acceptable.

The splash pad part did arrive; however it was the wrong part. The correct part was promised to be sent out and was given the estimate of two weeks. As of now the splash pad will continue to be open on weekends and holidays 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. There will also be extended hours during city run events. There was also discussion on how to make sure this issue did not occur again once the part arrives. Bringing the box above ground was discussed as well at winterizing the board once the session has ended. Mr. Ingram said we would also have cost proposal at the next meeting to get the spashpad added to the system where it can be turned on and off wirelessly.
