Weaver City Council Meeting Summary – September 24th

Weaver City Council

Weaver, AL – The regularly scheduled Weaver City Council meeting on September 24th faced a significant hurdle as no quorum was established, leading to the cancellation of the formal meeting. Present at the session were Mayor Clendenning and Councilmembers McRae and Burns. Despite this setback, the work session proceeded as planned, where key discussions on the city budget, public safety, and park improvements took place.

Budget Discussion

One of the main topics covered was the city’s budget. The council discussed a variety of line items, including revenue projections from new businesses. The conversation included the possibility of adjusting the base numbers in six months if the income from these businesses exceeds expectations. Budgetary adjustments included the removal of certain water-related costs and the allocation for an additional officer in the police department.

The council also examined the sale of land near Buckhorn Lake. While no votes could be cast due to the lack of a quorum, dates for bid openings and approvals were discussed. Tentative plans suggest bids will be opened on November 1st, with the council set to review the bids on November 11th and make a final decision on November 25th.

Public Safety and Grants

The council discussed funding for public safety, including the successful repair of a city truck and efforts to apply for firefighter assistance grants. These grants would be used for new equipment and radios. There was also talk about securing a used fire truck, which could save the city significant costs compared to ordering a new vehicle.

Park Improvements

Park security was another topic of focus, with discussions about installing cameras in park bathrooms. The proposed system would cost around $2,500, and police would have access to the footage. Councilmembers also discussed the high cost of replacing umbrellas in the park and are considering investing in durable, permanent fiberglass models, estimated at $1,000 each, to reduce future expenses.

Event Planning

Although no formal decisions were made, the council also began preparing for upcoming city events, including the Christmas Parade and a possible “Christmas in the Park” event. The council discussed inviting vendors from the recent Heritage Day, which saw a smaller turnout than expected but had good sales from those who attended.

Closing Remarks

In conclusion, despite the inability to vote on any items due to the lack of a quorum, the session allowed for productive discussions on a range of important city matters, setting the stage for future decisions when a quorum is present.
