Weaver Earns Homecoming Victory; Westbrook Christian’s Smith Achieves 300th Career Win

WEAVER — Weaver shewed away the strain of a challenging season with a glorious homecoming Friday.

Junior Allen accounted for 164 total yards and two touchdowns, and the Bearcats beat Locust Fork 36-34 in Class 3A, Region 6 play.

Weaver improved to 2-5 overall, 2-3 region and got their first victory after a midseason coaching transition. Third-year head coach Ken Cofer resigned Sept. 30 after an 11-day period of administrative leave and suspension following a verbal exchange with a parent at a middle school game.

Weaver’s victory Friday marked its first under Michael Spurling, who coached his fourth game as the Bearcats’ interim head coach.

“Our boys have fought hard, and they get back up every time they get knocked down,” Spurling said. “Love those boys and the coaching staff.

“But, above all, glory goes to Jesus Christ, win, lose, or draw.”

Allen rushed for 85 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 79 yards. Taylor Green rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns, and Caden Green returned a fumble 35 yards for a touchdown.

Leegion Bragg added an interception, and Cisco Nira had 45 receiving yards.

WESTBROOK CHRISTIAN 35, TRION (Ga.) 28 (OT): Third-year Westbrook Christian head coach Steve Smith picked up his 300th career victory, and the Warriors went across the state line to improve to 6-1.

Smith is 300-91 in 31 years as a head coach. That includes 85-45 in 11 season at Cedar Bluff, 198-63 with five Class 3A state titles in 17 season at Piedmont and 17-10 in his third season at Westbrook Christian.

“So grateful to get to do this for 31 years as a head coach,” Smith said. “Great schools,communities and booster clubs along with supportive fan bases everywhere we’ve been.

“Loyal assistants and outstanding players deserve a lot of the credit. I’m thankful for each and every one of those people who made up our program.”

Westbrook Christian quarterback Brody Blevins rushed 39 times for 257 yards and four touchdowns and completed five of seven passes for 96 yards Friday. His 2-yard touchdown run in overtime proved to be the difference, and his other touchdown runs covered four, 15 and 10 yards.

Running back Brodey Wood carried 20 times for 120 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown run, and Brodie Johnson caught four passes for 90 yards.

PIEDMONT 51, J.B. PENNINGTON 0: Cole Austin completed nine of 13 passes for 211 yards and three touchdowns, and Piedmont moved to 7-0, 5-0 in Class 3A, Region 6.

Austin’s night included touchdown passes of 32 and 55 yards to Rollie Pinto and 49 yards to Aliandre Wright. Austin rushed for touchdowns of 26 and five yards.

Pinto caught five passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns, returned a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown and rushed 19 yards for another score.

Jaxon Howard rushed for a team-high 66 yards, and Austin added 47.

GLENCOE 46, SAKS 6: Bronner McMurray rushed for 96 yards and two touchdowns, and Glencoe improved to 5-2 overall, 4-1 in Class 3A, Region 6.

Saks is 1-7, 0-6.

McMurray’s touchdown runs covered four and 44 yards. Alex Hudson added 66 yards rushing, including a 52-yard touchdown run.

Glencoe quarterback Jaymen Mintz completed eight of 14 passes for 65 yards and three touchdowns … four and 10 yards to Bryce Borntrager and five yards to Isaiah Young.

Aiden Johnson added a 19-yard touchdown run.

Saks’ Delandas Allen completed 10 of 20 passes for 67 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown pass to Jakhari Monroe.

PLEASANT VALLEY 42, GASTON 8: Braxton Salster accounted for 205 yards in total offense and four touchdowns, and Pleasant Valley improved to 7-1 overall, 3-1 in Class 2A, Region 7.

Gaston is 1-6, 0-4.

Salster completed eight of 11 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns … 51 yards to Nic Acker and 44 yards to Cooper Dougal. Salster’s 50 yards rushing included touchdown runs of one and 14 yards.

Salster also had six tackles and an interception.

Dougal threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Hudson Sparks.

Izayah Nevens led the Raiders’ defense with 11 tackles one hurry and one sack, and Jake Barnwell went 6-for-6 one extra points.

ALEXANDRIA 56, ASHVILLE 13: Alexandria reeled off 42 first-quarter points and cruised to victory in Class 4A, Region 6 play.

The Valley Cubs upped to 6-1 overall, 4-1 region headed into next week’s key region game against Cherokee County at home. The winner will gain maintain control of its destiny for a home playoff game in the first round.

Alexandria gained 345 yards rushing Friday, with Jayden Nixon rushing 10 times for 103 yards and two touchdowns. J.J. Beason added 76 yards and a touchdown, and Jonathan Santos rushed for 66 yards.

Quarterback Cole Wheeler hit on eight of 14 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown, and Evan White posted team highs of five catches and 87 yards,

Alexandria’s big first quarter featured Nixon touchdown runs of 47 and five yards, Wheeler’s 30-yard touchdown pass to Beason and Wheeler’s 2-yard touchdown run. Ryan Brown rushed 13 yards for a touchdown and returned a fumble 90 yards for a score.

CHEROKEE COUNTY 24, HOKES BLUFF 10: Keyshawn Woods rushed for 313 yards and a touchdown, and Cherokee County rebounded from its loss at Anniston on Oct. 3 to keep pace with Alexandria in a likely battle for second place in Class 4A, Region 6.

The two teams play Oct. 17 at Alexandria (6-1, 4-1), with the winner maintaining control of its destiny for a first-round playoff game at home. Cherokee County is 6-2, 4–1.

Woods’ 59-yard touchdown with 28 seconds left provided the final margin of victory against Hokes Bluff (4-3, 2-3)

Adam Griffith completed six of 15 passes for 103 yards, including touchdown passes of 11 yards Ben Moseley and 33 yards to Keshawn Thomas.

Hugh Miller hit a 21-yard field goal.

Bryce Whitaker’s 1-yard touchdown brought Hokes Bluff within 17-10 with 8:05 left in the fourth quarter, and Allen Cox got the scoring started with a 21-yard field goal in the first quarter.

Whitaker rushed for 142 yards and completed six of 13 passes for 38 yards.

ANNISTON 48, ETOWAH 7: Damon Pope completed nine of 10 passes for 216 yards, and undefeated Anniston improved to 7-0, 5-0 in Class 4A, Region 6.

Etowah is 0-7, 0-5.

Jabari Williams rushed five times for 127 yards, including touchdown runs of 80, one and 36 yards.

The Bulldogs got a 4-yard touchdown run from Quintavius Cunningham and a 1-yard score from Jamorris Young.

Kaleb Moore caught three passes for 111 yards, and Jakorie Carr caught three passes for 88 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown reception.

Jalyne Henderson paced Anniston’s defense with nine tackles, including seven solos, and Dakyus Baker returned an interception 27 yards.

JACKSONVILLE 34, LINCOLN 24: Jaden Jones rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns, and Jacksonville improved to 5-3 overall, 4-1 in Class 5A, Region 6 headed into an open date and a key region showdown at St. Clair County on Oct. 24.

The Jacksonville-St. Clair County winner will clinch second place in the region and a home playoff game in the first round.

Lincoln fell to 2-5, 1-3 Friday.

Jones also caught three passes for 23 yards and a touchdown, and Qua McNeal added 76 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Quarterback Kamouri Harmon completed eight of 11 passes for 59 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 60 yards.

Jacksonville gained 347 total yards, 288 on the ground.

ONEONTA 36, WHITE PLAINS 21: Crew Martin completed 12 of 23 passes for 194 yards and a touchdown, and White Plains stands at 2-5, 0-5 in Class 4A, Region 6.

Martin threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Braxton Borrelli.

Jayden Murray’s 83 yards rushing included a 79-yard touchdown run.
