Calhoun County, AL – On Sunday between 9:00 and 9:30PM the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the 3000 block of Choccolocco Rd. to investigate a possible gunshot victim. Upon arrival deputies located Mark Alexander Jones, 29, suffering from gunshot wounds. First responders started life saving procedures and transported Jones to RMC where he succumbed to his wounds.
Investigators on scene were able to determine that Jones and his wife lived in the same trailer along with another man that was also romantically involved with Jones’ wife. Investigators learned that the boyfriend made the determination that he wanted to move out of the trailer and requested help from his family to gather his belongings. The boyfriends’ grandfather was outside assisting with the move when Jones reportedly became suddenly angry and made threatening statements towards the others. It was also reported that Jones then entered into the trailer and quickly returned with a shotgun and pointed at the direction of the others. The grandfather, who was licensed to carry a firearm, drew his weapon from his side and began firing at Jones striking him three times. In total there were six people present during the deadly conflict.
Calhoun County Sheriff, Matthew Wade, advised that the grandfather remained on scene and spoke with investigators. Sheriff Wade went on to explain that no arrests have been made but the case will go before a Calhoun County Grand Jury to determine if the grandfather was acting in self-defense.
Sheriff Wade expressed his disappointment that many people are quick to utilize a firearm during an argument; he stated, “A firearm should be the last resort for any situation. In this case the husband’s first reaction was to get a gun.” The Sheriff also advised, “I am a strong supporter of the second amendment and fully believe that law abiding citizens should have access them, but they should understand the ramifications if it is used illegally.”
