Wells Leads Oxford City Championship with Blazing 7-Under 65

Wells shoots 7-under 65 to open Oxford City Championship, once again threatening to bag his first Calhoun County Golf Tour victory.

OXFORD — Tanner Wells keeps knocking on the door of a Calhoun County Golf Tour victory, and his knocks grew louder Saturday.

Wells shot a 7-under-par 65 to lead Chad Calvert by three strokes after the first round of the Oxford City Championship at Cider Ridge.

Nine other golfers shot under par, including Brennan Clay, Caleb Morrow and Layton Bussey at 69. Robin Wood and Sawyer Edwards checked in at 70, and a foursome of 71s included Jacob LeCroy, Mark McCaig, Ty Cole and John Rollins.

Defending champion Gary Wigington shot 1-over 73.
