MONTGOMERY, AL — Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall issued a statement Thursday following the sentencing of Ibraheem Yazeed to life in prison for the 2019 abduction and murder of Aniah Blanchard.
Earlier this year, a jury convicted Yazeed of murder in connection with the kidnapping and killing of Blanchard, whose disappearance in October 2019 led to a large multi-agency search effort across East Alabama. On Thursday, the court sentenced Yazeed to life imprisonment.
In his statement, Marshall said the sentence reflected the severity of the crime and acknowledged the years of grief endured by Blanchard’s family and loved ones.
“Today, justice has been served. I am gratified that the court imposed the maximum allowable sentence for the senseless and brutal murder of Aniah Blanchard, life in prison. It is the sentence that the weight of this crime demanded, and one that Aniah’s family has long deserved,” Marshall stated.
Marshall also expressed sympathy to Blanchard’s family, saying he hopes the outcome provides “a measure of closure” as they continue healing from the loss.
The Attorney General noted that the case highlighted the impact of Alabama’s Speedy Trial Act, legislation supported by the Attorney General’s Office and sponsored by Will Barfoot. Marshall also thanked Sarah Stewart for her leadership and use of the law during the case proceedings.
Marshall further recognized the efforts of numerous law enforcement agencies, investigators, volunteers, and search teams involved throughout the investigation and prosecution. Agencies acknowledged included the Alabama Attorney General’s Criminal Trials and Investigations Divisions, Auburn Police Department, Montgomery Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Macon County Sheriff’s Office, Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Opelika Police Department, Tuskegee Police Department, Shorter Police Department, EquuSearch Search and Recovery, and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, along with many volunteers and assisting agencies.
