Greater Things to Host First Jacksonville City Cemetery Restoration Volunteer Work Day June 6

Jacksonville City Cemetery Restoration Project

Jacksonville, AL – The Greater Things organization in Jacksonville will host the first volunteer work day for the Jacksonville City Cemetery Restoration Project on Saturday, June 6, inviting community members to help preserve one of the city’s most historic sites.

Volunteers will gather from 9 a.m. until approximately noon in Section A of Jacksonville City Cemetery, the cemetery’s oldest section. Work will begin near the Pelham monument and expand outward as participants clean and restore grave markers throughout the area.

According to organizers, the initial volunteer effort will focus on teaching proper cemetery stone cleaning techniques while addressing some of the most weathered markers in the section. The project is designed to help preserve Jacksonville’s history and create a lasting record for future generations.

No prior experience is required to participate. Greater Things will provide training, cleaning supplies, and guidance throughout the work session.

Participants are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes, clothing that can get dirty, and eye protection. Organizers also recommend bringing a hat, water bottle, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Anyone with soft brushes, clean paint stirring sticks, or garden pump sprayers available for donation is encouraged to bring them.

Organizers noted that some areas may contain unstable or hazardous gravestones, making the work day potentially unsuitable for young children. All participants will be required to sign a release form before taking part.

Families with ancestors buried in Section A are invited to participate as a special family project. Greater Things is offering materials and guidance to families interested in cleaning and preserving the markers of their ancestors and asks that interested individuals contact organizers as soon as possible with specific information about the graves.

The volunteer work day provides residents with an opportunity to contribute to the preservation of Jacksonville’s history while learning more about the community’s past and connecting with others interested in local heritage.

The Jacksonville City Cemetery Restoration Project volunteer work day will take place at Jacksonville City Cemetery, Section A, on Saturday, June 6, beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing until approximately noon.
