Attorney General Issues Cease-and-Desist Letters Over Abortion Pill Sales in Alabama

Attorney General Marshall Issues Cease and Desist Letters to Mail Order Abortion Providers

MONTGOMERY, AL — Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced that cease-and-desist letters have been sent to six companies accused of illegally advertising, facilitating, and enabling the sale of chemical abortion-inducing drugs to consumers in Alabama.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, the letters demand that the companies immediately stop advertising, selling, and delivering abortion-inducing drugs to individuals in Alabama. State officials say companies that fail to comply could face formal investigations and potential legal action under Alabama’s consumer protection laws.

Marshall stated that Alabama law prohibits abortion and that companies marketing abortion-inducing drugs to Alabama residents are violating state law.

The Attorney General’s Office noted that violations of Alabama’s unlawful trade practices statutes may result in civil penalties of up to $2,000 per violation.

State officials cited Alabama law, which prohibits the use, prescription, or administration of drugs or substances intended to terminate a known pregnancy. The Attorney General’s Office contends that this prohibition extends to out-of-state companies that ship abortion-inducing medications into Alabama.

The cease-and-desist letters also raise concerns about how the companies market the safety of abortion pills. According to the Attorney General’s Office, several companies describe the medications as safe, while the state points to medical research that identifies potential complications associated with their use.

The Attorney General’s Office referenced a 2025 analysis of an all-payer insurance claims database involving 865,727 women prescribed Mifepristone. The study found that approximately 10.93 percent experienced serious adverse events, including sepsis, infection, hemorrhaging, and other significant complications.

The letters were sent to Plan C, a project of Possibility Labs in San Francisco, California; Southern Woven of New York, New York; ybycmeds of Sanborn, New York; Abortion Pills in Private of the United Arab Emirates; Red State Access of New York, New York; and Cambridge Reproductive Health Consultants of Cambridge, Massachusetts.

No responses from the companies were included in the Attorney General’s announcement.
