This year’s theme, “When the unexpected happens, poison help is here for you 24/7,” underscores the importance of awareness, prevention, and access to emergency resources.
Among these vital resources is the Alabama Poison Information Center (APIC) at Children’s of Alabama, which operates round the clock, seven days a week. Established in 1958 as the 14th poison center in the United States, the APIC has been a lifeline for countless individuals in times of crisis. In 2023 alone, the center fielded over 107,000 calls, spanning all age groups from infants merely a day old to centenarians aged 102.
Jessica Pescatore, Clinical Director at the Alabama Poison Information Center, emphasized the significance of National Poison Prevention Week, stating, “It highlights the daily work we do to serve our communities and other healthcare professionals. A poisoning can occur in an instant, presenting a daunting situation. Our mission is to deliver the highest quality response, assessment, management, and follow-up to safeguard our fellow Alabamians.”
