Oxford, AL – In a moving tribute to the brave men and women who have served in the armed forces, the Oxford American Legion Post 111 held a special ceremony this past Saturday, May 18th, in honor of Armed Forces Day. The event, hosted at Memorial Gardens Cemetery and Dogwood Cemetery in Oxford, Alabama, was a solemn and poignant occasion that drew members of the community together to pay their respects.
The ceremony began with the arrival of the Punishers Motorcycle Club, led by Shawn Ankerich, setting a powerful tone for the day’s events. This was followed by an impressive Fly-Over performed by the Oxford Police Department helicopter, capturing the attention and admiration of the attendees.
The Alabama Artillery Group marked the official start of the ceremony with the firing of the starting cannon, a traditional and stirring commencement. Throughout the event, attendees were treated to a series of moving performances and presentations. The color guard presented the flags with dignity, while the local Girl Scouts led the pledge, embodying the spirit of unity and patriotism.
Musical tributes added an emotional depth to the ceremony. Amy Moore delivered stirring renditions of the National Anthem and other patriotic songs, and the Oxford Honors Choir performed a heartfelt version of the Armed Forces Medley, paying homage to the different branches of the military.
A highlight of the ceremony was the three-round volley fired by the Alabama Artillery Group, followed by the haunting and beautiful strains of Taps, performed by Annie Ingram. This solemn moment honored those who have given their lives in service to the nation.
A significant part of the event was the placement of flags on the graves of veterans. The General Public, with assistance from the American Legion, took part in this act of remembrance, decorating headstones with flags provided by the Legion. Both cemeteries had been carefully marked with small white marker flags to ensure every veteran’s grave received due recognition.
The ceremony was presided over by the Post Commander, with Judge Advocate Preston Hale providing instructions and guidance throughout the event. Chaplain Jon Clark offered an invocation and benediction, bringing a sense of reverence and reflection to the proceedings. A guest speaker, whose insights and reflections added a personal touch to the event, also addressed the attendees.
The Armed Forces Day ceremony was open to all community members who wished to honor the service and sacrifice of military personnel. It served as a poignant reminder of the immense debt of gratitude owed to those who have served and continue to serve in the armed forces.
