OXFORD, AL — On Friday, October 18, 2024, the City of Oxford Fire Department responded to a significant fire at Tull Chemical Company located at 130 Burton St. The call came in at 11:14 p.m., and despite efforts to control the blaze, at least one building on the property has been declared a complete loss. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities have been reported.
The fire department received crucial support from several local and state organizations. The Anniston Fire Department, Oxford Health Systems Paramedics, Oxford Police Department, Calhoun County Emergency Management Agency, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) all provided assistance, ensuring the fire was contained and additional risks were mitigated.
One of the major concerns was the potential environmental impact, particularly the threat of chemical runoff contaminating nearby Snow Creek. With assistance and equipment from the organizations on-site, the water runoff was successfully contained within the property, preventing any pollutants from reaching the creek.
At this time, the property continues to be monitored by the Oxford Fire Department, while the EPA has taken the lead in overseeing the clean-up efforts to ensure safety and environmental compliance.
