Calhoun County, AL – Amid the rare snow and icy conditions that struck Alabama last Friday, Calhoun County Animal Control kennel tech Jessie Hodge went above and beyond to ensure the animals under her care were safe. Displaying an extraordinary level of dedication, Hodge walked approximately four miles to work to tend to the 92 animals housed at the shelter.
Hodge’s supervisor, Director Naomi Richards, explained that Jessie did not notify anyone about her decision to walk to work. “She didn’t tell me until she was almost here,” Richards shared. “Jessie always puts the animals first and is constantly going above and beyond. This is just who she is—hardworking, selfless, and dedicated.”
Upon learning of Jessie’s trek, Commissioner Terry Howell paid a visit to the shelter to ensure she was taken care of and offered her a ride home. Initially, Jessie intended to walk home as well, concerned about others navigating icy roads, but ultimately accepted a ride from Richards after some persuasion.
“This story highlights the kind of dedication our county employees show every day,” said Howell. “Jessie didn’t have to come in that day, but she did, simply because she cares so much about her work and the animals.”
Richards also shared how the shelter prepared for the cold weather. “Earlier last year, we installed a new heating unit, and the animals stayed warm and comfortable. We also added extra bedding and straw as a precaution in case of power outages,” she said.
Calhoun County’s Animal Control team works tirelessly seven days a week, ensuring the animals are fed, cleaned, and cared for. Richards praised her entire staff for their dedication. “Every member of our team is hardworking and puts the animals first, whether it’s staying late or coming in on challenging days like this one,” she said.
This act of commitment not only underscores the dedication of Calhoun County’s employees but also shines a spotlight on the vital work animal control officers do behind the scenes to care for animals in need.
