GADSDEN, AL – Community members gathered at Gadsden City Hall to celebrate the extraordinary career and contributions of Dr. Kathy Murphy, a respected educator and leader whose impact spans decades and institutions across Alabama. During a special ceremony held in the Council Chambers, Mayor Craig Ford and the Gadsden City Council officially proclaimed May 31, 2025, as Dr. Kathy Murphy Day, honoring her legacy of service in education and leadership.
The proclamation cited Dr. Murphy’s lifelong dedication to academic excellence, beginning with her early work as a teacher in Greenville, Alabama, and culminating in her transformative role as President of Gadsden State Community College. It recognized her consistent efforts to elevate educational standards, expand workforce development programs, and enhance learning opportunities for thousands of students.
“Dr. Murphy has served with excellence and integrity,” the proclamation read, acknowledging her influence in both K-12 and higher education, including leadership roles at Judson College, Auburn University at Montgomery, and the University of West Georgia. Her tenure as Superintendent of Hoover City Schools was also highlighted as a period of strong educational progress and student-focused reform.
In addition to the mayoral proclamation, Dr. Murphy received a plaque from the Gadsden-Etowah Industrial Development Authority, presented by Executive Director David Hook and Assistant Director William R. Greene II. The gesture underscored the strong partnership between Gadsden State and the Authority in supporting workforce development and regional economic growth.
Dr. Kathy Murphy Day serves as a lasting recognition of a career defined by service, innovation, and a deep commitment to the success of Alabama’s students and educational institutions.
