ANNISTON, AL – The Calhoun County Commission unanimously approved all items on their agenda during their regular meeting held Thursday, June 12, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.
The commission addressed multiple property-related matters, approving 11 nuisance abatements for properties primarily located in Anniston. These included properties on Old Birmingham Highway, Moore Street, Oakridge Avenue, and West 33rd Street, among others.
The commission also approved the dismissal of 10 nuisance cases for properties that have come into compliance, including locations on Fieldstone Way in Jacksonville and various Anniston addresses.
Additionally, commissioners approved 21 new nuisance declarations for properties requiring code enforcement action, with most properties located throughout Anniston neighborhoods.
One nuisance invoice was approved for a property on Smith Street in Oxford, totaling $4,026.
The commission awarded two significant bid contracts:
- Public nuisance removal services to Wendy Thornton, with contracts totaling $3,170 across seven properties
- Solid tires and wheel assemblies to Southern Tire Mart LLC for $24,005
Commissioners also approved a three-year extension of daily banking services with Regions Bank, effective June 9, 2025, through June 8, 2028.
Several surplus property items were approved for disposal, including:
- A refrigeration cooler from the Coroner’s office, to be donated to Jacksonville State University
- A Liberty Colonel D-50 gun safe from the Sheriff’s Office
- A 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe from the Commissioner of Licenses office
- Three 2018 Chevrolet crew cab trucks from the Maintenance department
The commission approved letters of intent to purchase equipment for fiscal year 2026, including:
- Highway Department equipment through the Association of County Commissions of Alabama (ACCA) joint bid project, featuring dump truck chassis, tractors, and steel dump bodies
- A Caterpillar articulating truck for the Landfill Department valued at $647,257
Three federal grant applications through the COPS (Community Oriented Policing Services) program were approved:
- COPS Hiring Program Grant
- COPS Anti-Heroin Task Force Grant
- COPS Anti-Methamphetamine Program Grant
These grants are designed to enhance community policing capacity and support drug enforcement efforts in the county.
The commission approved several agreements for ongoing county operations:
- A right-of-way acquisition resolution for Mitchellville Road
- Professional mapping services agreement with G-Squared
- Professional engineering services agreement with Goodwyn Mills Cawood for ALDOT Bynum Leatherwood road improvements
- A change order for jail addition and renovation cable relocation work, adding $4,125 to the project cost
- The county’s FY24 audit agreement with the Alabama Department of Examiners of Public Accounts
- An employment contract modification for the Sheriff’s Office Information Technology Manager position
The commission concluded the meeting with a public comment period before adjourning. Their next regular meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 26, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.
