Senate Passes Tax Relief and Spending Bill with Key Provisions for Alabama; Senator Britt Votes in Favor

U.S. Senator Katie Britt Votes to Deliver Largest Tax Cut in American History, Secures Critical Child Care Tax Relief and Investments in Alabama

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-AL) voted this week in support of the Senate reconciliation bill, which proponents describe as the largest tax cut in American history for working-class citizens. The bill narrowly passed the Senate by a vote of 51-50 and now heads to the House of Representatives. If approved, it will be sent to President Trump for signature.

The legislation aims to prevent what supporters characterize as a significant tax increase, estimating nearly $2,200 in annual savings for the average household in Alabama. The bill includes over $600 billion in new tax relief measures targeted at middle- and lower-income Americans, and it preserves existing Medicaid rates in non-expansion states such as Alabama.

Among the key provisions is a permanent update to several child care-related tax credits. These include the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit (CDCTC), the Employer-Provided Child Care Tax Credit (45F), and the Dependent Care Assistance Program (DCAP)—marking the first permanent changes to these credits in more than two decades.

Senator Britt advocated for rural healthcare funding as well, securing $500 million over five years for Alabama hospitals. The bill also includes increased investment in historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), such as a $60 million appropriation for the 1890 Scholars Program.

In her role as Chair of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Appropriations, Senator Britt supported the bill’s inclusion of $130.3 billion for border security, including funding to complete segments of the U.S.-Mexico border wall.

The legislation also provides funding for several Alabama-based initiatives, including:

  • $100 million for infrastructure improvements at Marshall Space Flight Center,

  • $25 million for Redstone Arsenal’s role in the Golden Dome project,

  • $105 million for the Feral Swine Eradication Program,

  • Increases in agricultural support through reference price and base acre adjustments,

  • Protections for family-owned farms by preserving current estate tax exemptions.

Additional provisions supported by Britt include changes to offshore oil royalty caps, coal leasing incentives, and the expansion of clean energy tax credits for met coal. The bill also reduces funding levels for the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau (CFPB).

The legislation is expected to have broad economic implications, touching on agriculture, space exploration, border security, and tax policy. Its final outcome now depends on passage in the House.
