JACKSONVILLE — Jacksonville State University has been named one of only two universities in Alabama to participate in the Alabama Commission on Higher Education’s (ACHE) new Pathways to Progress Initiative, a state-funded program aimed at helping adults return to college, complete their degrees, and contribute to workforce growth.
The initiative is designed to promote economic development and social stability by aligning educational attainment with industry needs. In Jacksonville State’s service area, the program will focus on preparing more graduates in high-demand fields such as nursing, respiratory therapy, and education.
“We’re grateful to the Alabama Commission on Higher Education for choosing Jax State as one of only two universities in the state to be part of this important initiative,” said President Dr. Don C. Killingsworth, Jr. “Being selected for the Pathways to Progress Initiative affirms our commitment to helping Northeast Alabama grow by building a stronger workforce and creating more opportunities for adult learners.”
Eligible students may receive up to $3,000 per semester toward a bachelor’s degree. Combined with Jax State’s existing institutional scholarships, the grant provides significant financial support, making it more affordable for adults to complete their degrees. Funding is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis to full-time and part-time students who meet residency, academic progress, and degree program requirements.
To qualify, applicants must live in Calhoun, Cherokee, Clay, Cleburne, Etowah, Talladega, or Randolph counties, hold an associate’s degree with at least 60 credit hours toward a bachelor’s, have a 2025–2026 FAFSA on file, and be in good financial aid standing.
“This grant provides a life-changing opportunity for adults who want to finish their degrees without leaving their communities,” said Dr. Christie Shelton, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. “By combining this funding with Jax State’s existing scholarships, we’re removing financial barriers so more students can achieve their goals and strengthen the workforce in our region.”
Applications for the Fall 2025 semester are due September 15, with additional deadlines for Spring and Summer 2026 in February and June.
