ALEA Reminds Motorists to Stay Alert as Deer Movement Increases Statewide

Montgomery, AL – The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is urging motorists to remain vigilant on Alabama’s roadways as deer movement increases during the fall and winter months, contributing to a significant rise in vehicle-versus-wildlife crashes statewide.

According to ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division, Troopers investigated 1,652 vehicle-versus-wildlife crashes in 2024. A large majority of those incidents occurred during the fall and early winter, when deer activity naturally intensifies. The agency reported 1,243 crashes during the official fall and winter months, compared to 409 crashes in spring and summer, demonstrating a clear seasonal shift.

Monthly totals from 2024 show the highest number of crashes taking place in January, with 328 reported incidents, followed by December with 288. October and November also saw elevated numbers, with 167 and 177 crashes respectively. In contrast, the lowest totals occurred during the late spring and early summer months, with April recording just 60 incidents and May only 45.

ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor noted that the data reflects only the crashes investigated by state Troopers, not those handled by local agencies. However, he said the trend remains consistent year after year. “We urge everyone traveling Alabama’s roadways to stay alert, particularly in rural and wooded areas where deer are most active,” Taylor said.

As deer are most active during dawn and dusk, ALEA encourages motorists to remain especially attentive during these times. The agency also advises using high beams when appropriate to improve visibility, exercising caution when multiple deer may be present, and avoiding sudden swerves, which can result in more severe collisions or rollovers. Wearing a seat belt remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the chance of injury in any crash.

Motorists who encounter roadway hazards or are involved in a collision are encouraged to contact law enforcement by dialing 911 or *HP (*47).
