Washington D.C. – U.S. Senators Katie Britt (R-AL), John Cornyn (R-TX), and several Senate Republican colleagues have introduced the Back the Blue Act, a bill aimed at strengthening federal protections for law enforcement officers and increasing penalties for criminals who target them.
According to the bill sponsors, the legislation is designed to respond to rising threats and violence against officers. The proposal would enhance laws protecting police, create a specific aggravating factor for federal death penalty prosecutions involving the killing of an officer, and limit federal habeas relief for individuals convicted of such murders. It would also broaden self-defense and Second Amendment protections for officers.
Senator Britt said the measure underscores the need to support those who face risks on the job.
“As dangerous, violent threats and rhetoric rise against our courageous law enforcement officers, it is increasingly important that Congress ensures they have the protection and resources they deserve,” Britt stated. She added that the Back the Blue Act “reaffirms our steadfast support for those who risk their lives every day to keep our nation safe.”
Senator Cornyn echoed the emphasis on accountability.
“Our law enforcement officers bravely risk their lives daily to protect our communities, and anyone who targets them should be met with the full force of the law, including the death penalty,” he said. Cornyn described the bill as a message that targeted attacks “will not be tolerated” and that “dangerous criminals will be held accountable.”
The legislation has received endorsements from multiple national law enforcement organizations, including the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO), Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA), Major County Sheriffs of America (MCSA), National Narcotic Officers’ Associations’ Coalition (NNOAC), Association of State Criminal Investigative Agencies (ASCIA), and the Sergeants Benevolent Association NYPD.
Senator Britt has previously supported several measures focused on officer safety. Her Laken Riley Act included a requirement for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain any undocumented immigrant who assaults a law enforcement officer. She also partnered with Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) earlier this year on the CLEAN D.C. Act, aimed at overturning actions by the D.C. City Council that critics say weaken law enforcement and increase risks for officers.
Supporters of the Back the Blue Act argue that recent attacks on law enforcement highlight the need for stronger federal protections. The bill will move forward for consideration in the U.S. Senate.
