CALHOUN COUNTY, AL – The Calhoun County Board of Education met recognizing outstanding educators and approving several key personnel decisions.

The board honored two teachers who recently earned National Board Certification: Tracy Wheels, a third-grade teacher at Alexandria Elementary School, and Leanne Bryan, library media specialist at Saks Elementary School. Superintendent Tony Willis noted that the rigorous certification process, comparable to earning a doctorate in education, significantly enhances teaching quality.

In celebration of School Board Appreciation Month, Saks Elementary students created handmade cards and drawings for board members. The district’s principals and directors presented each board member with a Maxwell Leadership Bible, featuring highlighted verses and personal notes from administrators throughout the system.

Board President Michael Webb shared with the Calhoun Journal that this was “the greatest gift he has ever been given during his time on the board.” Board Member Tobi Burt echoed the sentiment, noting how meaningful the gift has been and that he finds himself daily looking at the thoughtful notes and reading the scriptures marked by the district’s leadership team.

The board approved several action items, including contracts for math and reading interventionists at Pleasant Valley Elementary and Walter Wellborn High School. Members also authorized an easement for a proposed turn lane project at Weaver Elementary School, which the City of Weaver may fund to improve traffic flow and safety.

In a significant personnel decision, the board approved the hiring of Logan Brooks as head football coach at Weaver High School. Brooks, who recently welcomed his second daughter, expressed excitement about building a program focused on relationships, discipline, and accountability.

Chief School Financial Officer presented the November 2025 financial report, showing cash and cash equivalents of approximately $60 million with a general fund balance of $42 million, equating to five months of reserves. Revenue collections are on track, with property tax remittances expected to increase in coming months.

Willis reported positive mid-year academic trends, particularly in seventh and eighth grades, and announced the district received substantial special education grants. The board also approved updates to the supplement list for spring coaching positions and other staff assignments.

Webb commended maintenance director TJ for exceptional work addressing facility issues at Welburn and other schools, while also recognizing the transportation department for their attention to detail and comprehensive training programs.
