JACKSONVILLE, AL — Jacksonville State University has approved a new partnership with Sanders Flight Training Center to provide flight instruction for students enrolled in the Commercial Aviation concentration within its upcoming Bachelor of Science in Aviation program.
The agreement was approved by the Jax State Board of Trustees during its quarterly meeting on Tuesday. The partnership will ensure that students pursuing the Commercial Aviation track receive structured, FAA-certified flight training as part of their academic curriculum, preparing them for careers as professional pilots.
“This partnership with Sanders Flight Training Center represents an important next step in the growth of our Aviation program,” said Dr. Don C. Killingsworth Jr., President of Jacksonville State University. “Their long track record in flight training gives our students access to consistent, hands-on instruction and mentorship that builds a strong understanding of aviation, with a clear emphasis on safety and leadership.”
Founded in 1996 by Joseph Gordon Sanders Jr., Sanders Flight Training Center began as a small operation at Walker County Airport-Bevill Field in Jasper and has expanded to include additional training locations in Tuscaloosa and Huntsville. Under the new agreement, Jax State students will complete their flight training at the Jasper campus.
Jessica Sanders Walker, President of Sanders Flight Training Center, said the partnership reflects a broader investment in the state’s aviation industry.
“As we continue to grow, it is of utmost importance to continue to provide the highest quality of flight instruction across our region,” said Jessica Sanders Walker. “Supporting the growth of JSU’s aviation program is not simply an investment in one institution; it is an investment in Alabama’s economic development, workforce stability, and long-term competitiveness in the aviation sector.”
For three decades, Sanders Flight Training Center has provided structured training for aspiring pilots, military aviators transitioning to commercial aviation, and professionals seeking advanced certifications.
“Launching our Aviation program with Sanders Flight Training Center allows us to pair strong academic preparation with high-quality flight training from day one,” said Dr. Christie Shelton, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Their experience brings an important level of structure and industry alignment to the program as we prepare students for careers in aviation.”
The two organizations have signed a memorandum of agreement outlining responsibilities, training standards, and collaboration efforts to support student success.
Jacksonville State University’s Bachelor of Science in Aviation program is set to launch in Fall 2026. The program will offer concentrations in Aviation Management, Commercial Aviation, and Public Safety Aviation, with a focus on preparing students for leadership and operational roles across the aviation industry.
