Jacksonville, AL – An arrest has been made in connection with a burglary at Edwards Grocery and a subsequent high-speed chase that occurred in late March, according to Jacksonville Police Chief Marcus Wood.
Authorities reported that Marcus Dewayne Evans, 24, of Bessemer, was taken into custody on Monday, April 20. Evans is charged with third-degree burglary and fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement. His arrest marks the first of three expected in the case.
The incident stems from an early morning burglary at Edwards Grocery, located on Alabama 204, followed by a high-speed pursuit involving multiple suspects.
“We believe this is the first arrest of three,” Wood stated. “Investigators are still scouring over evidence. We will not rest until all three individuals have been arrested.”
The Jacksonville Police Department worked in coordination with the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force to locate and apprehend Evans. Additional assistance in the investigation has been provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the East Metro Area Crime Center, and the Center for Applied Forensics at Jacksonville State University.
Officials indicated that the investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue working to identify and apprehend the remaining two suspects.
