ADEM Proposes $80,000 Civil Penalty Against Oxford’s Kronospan for Emission Violations

ADEM proposing a civil penalty of $80,000 against Kronospan

Oxford, AL – The Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) has proposed a civil penalty of $80,000 against Kronospan, LLC, for violations related to air emissions at its manufacturing facility in Eastaboga, Calhoun County.

According to ADEM’s proposed consent order, Kronospan exceeded the regulatory limits for carbon monoxide emissions over a 30-day rolling average on 40 separate days. The violations were detected through the facility’s continuous emissions monitoring system (CEMS), which tracks emissions data to ensure compliance with environmental standards.

Kronospan operates a medium-density fiberboard and particleboard manufacturing plant in Eastaboga. The company is required to comply with emissions standards outlined in its operating permit and state regulations.

If finalized, the order would require Kronospan to pay the penalty within 45 days of the order’s effective date and ensure full compliance with ADEM regulations going forward.

ADEM has opened a 30-day public comment period on the proposed order. Interested individuals may submit written comments or request a hearing by contacting Aubrey H. White, Chief of the Air Division, at the Alabama Department of Environmental Management. The full text of the proposed order is available online at adem.alabama.gov.

As of the time of publication, Kronospan has not responded to our request for comment on the proposed order.
