Montgomery, AL – As National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week (NWZAW) unfolds from April 15th to 19th, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) reiterates its steadfast commitment to ensuring the safety of workers and motorists within work zones across the state. This year’s theme, “Work Zones are temporary. Actions behind the wheel can last forever,” underscores the critical importance of vigilance and caution in these areas.
Work zones present heightened risks for both workers and drivers, necessitating stringent safety measures. ALEA recognizes the significance of maintaining vigilance and adherence to safety protocols in these zones and proudly participates in the national campaign to raise awareness about work zone safety.
Secretary Hal Taylor of ALEA emphasized the pivotal role played by troopers within ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division in deterring speeding and distracted driving in work zones. Troopers, with their extensive training and unwavering dedication to public safety, stand at the forefront of enforcing traffic laws and ensuring compliance with work zone regulations. Through proactive patrolling and enforcement efforts, ALEA Troopers work tirelessly to mitigate the risks associated with reckless driving behaviors, particularly within work zones.
Colonel Jonathan Archer, ALEA’s Department of Public Safety Director (DPS), reiterated the Agency’s unwavering commitment to work zone safety, affirming that the safety of both workers and motorists in work zones remains a top priority for ALEA. He highlighted the instrumental role of Troopers in achieving this goal through their enforcement efforts and community outreach initiatives.
During National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week 2024, ALEA urges all motorists to exercise caution, obey posted speed limits, and adhere to signage in work zones. By complying with traffic laws and remaining vigilant behind the wheel, drivers can help prevent accidents and safeguard the lives of workers and fellow travelers.
The weeklong national commemoration includes various events aimed at raising awareness and promoting safety, including Work Zone Safety Training Day on April 15th, the national kickoff event on April 16th, Go Orange Day on April 17th, a social media storm on April 18th, and a Moment of Silence on April 19th to remember those who lost their lives in work zone incidents.
