MONTGOMERY, AL — Governor Kay Ivey announced Thursday that she has approved a request for the Alabama National Guard (ALNG) to assist with operations surrounding America 250 events in Washington, D.C., as the nation prepares to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence.
According to the governor’s office, 150 Soldiers from the 123rd Quartermaster Company based in Arab, Alabama, will support logistical and operational efforts connected to major public events taking place in the nation’s capital. The Alabama Guardsmen will work alongside members of the D.C. National Guard and civil servants throughout the National Capital Region in coordination with the National Guard Bureau.
“One month from today, our nation will mark 250 years of freedom. Without hesitation, the Alabama National Guard is proud to support Freedom 250 events,” Governor Ivey said. “We live in the greatest state in the greatest nation on Earth, and I thank these Alabama patriots for answering the call to serve their country.”
The Soldiers are expected to arrive in Washington ahead of Independence Day celebrations and will serve a 90-day rotation.
Maj. Gen. David Pritchett, adjutant general of the Alabama National Guard, said the mission reflects the Guard’s long-standing commitment to serving both state and nation.
“From the founding of our country to the freedoms we are still blessed to defend today, America’s 250th anniversary is a powerful reminder of the service and sacrifice that make greatness possible,” Pritchett said. “The Alabama National Guard is a proud part of that history and tradition, and we are honored to support all the people of the United States as our nation marks this monumental milestone.”
The America 250 observance marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Events are planned across the country, with Washington, D.C., serving as a focal point for national celebrations.
The Alabama National Guard has served in its dual state and federal role since 1807, supporting military operations, emergency response efforts and national-level events throughout its history.
