Montgomery, AL — The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) has announced the passing of retired K-9 Pici, a valued member of the agency’s Highway Patrol Division, who served alongside Senior Trooper Brent Pickle. Pici passed away on Saturday, August 2, following a nearly 10-month battle with bone cancer.
K-9 Pici, born on October 4, 2018, began her service with ALEA in June 2020. Working in partnership with Sr. Trooper Pickle, Pici played a significant role in law enforcement operations across the state, particularly in the Birmingham area. Her work in narcotics and firearms detection contributed to numerous arrests and public safety efforts.
Described as a focused and skilled working dog, Pici assisted not only ALEA but also local agencies, becoming a familiar and respected presence in the region. Due to medical complications, she retired from duty earlier than expected and transitioned to life as a companion animal.
Pici spent her final day with her handler, enjoying a farewell ride and a breakfast of sausage biscuits before passing peacefully at Argo Animal Clinic. The clinic was credited by Trooper Pickle for its dedicated care throughout Pici’s illness.
ALEA leadership, including Secretary Hal Taylor and Colonel Jonathan Archer, recognized Pici’s service, emphasizing her contribution to both law enforcement operations and community safety. Their remarks reflected the agency’s appreciation for the bond between K-9 teams and their handlers, as well as the emotional toll of losing a working dog.
Pici’s passing marks the end of a brief but impactful career in service to the state. Her legacy, according to ALEA officials, will be remembered throughout the agency and by the communities she helped protect.
