ALEXANDRIA — Alexandria and Piedmont looked dominant, and showed a new-look offense while splitting two games in Friday’s five-team jamboree at Alexandria.
The jamboree featured Weaver and Munford, as well. Each team played a half each against two different teams, with varsity players playing the first quarter and junior-varsity players playing the second quarter.
Host Alexandria beat Ohatchee 21–7 and Weaver 49-7, and Piedmont beat Munford 27-0 and Weaver 34-7.
Ohatchee beat Munford 7-0.
Here’s a look at each team’s night on the new turf at Lou Scales Stadium:
Alexandria
Alexandria looked like a team returning its skill players, including a fourth-year starter at quarterback, and four of five starters up front.
Cole Wheeler threw four touchdown passes, and running back J.J. Beason rushed for three touchdowns despite what Alexandria coach Todd Ginn called a toe injury against Ohatchee.
Wide receivers M.J. Morris and Evan White caught two touchdown passes apiece, and sophomore running back Jayden Nixon ran for two scores. Max Guffey returned an interception for a touchdown.
“Luckily, we have the athletes where we can get it out, if they load the box, and make plays,” Ginn said. “Evan and M.J. are pretty good. The reason why they’re so open is, obviously, our line and also J.J. is pretty good, too.”
Piedmont
Piedmont’s Cole Austin ran for two touchdowns and threw for one, and running back Jaxson Howard ran for three, and Ben Tolbert returned an interception for a touchdown during varsity periods.
Isiah Pinto threw a touchdown pass, and Noah Bolton broke a touchdown run.
One area to watch with Piedmont this season is receiver, where Piedmont looks to find production after Rollie Pinto graduated. Carson Cleveland caught a touchdown pass, and Mason Morrow made an acrobatic catch while crashing to the turf to set up another score.
“We’ve got guys that can play,” Piedmont coach Jonathan Miller said. “We’re fine there. There’s a lot of touches to be had, and those guys see opportunity. It’s their time to step my and make plays when they’re called on.”
Piedmont H-back/tight end Ethan Tidwell left the action with his left arm in a sling from what Piedmont coach Jonathan MIller called a potential fractured collarbone.
Ohatchee
Quarterback Carson Sanders and Ohatchee’s new offense showed promise, moving the ball for two possessions in the varsity period against Alexandria and marching to the game’s only touchdown against Munford.
Sanders completed short and medium passes, including one side-armed throw to tight end Cayce Tittle while scrambling left. Sanders lobbed a 39-yard, tipped-ball touchdown pass to Phoenix Tuiolosega against Alexandria.
Ohatchee has switched from the “Ugly Eagle” offense to what second-year coach Blake Jennings called “a version of the wing-T.”
“It’s not th Ugly Eagle anymore,” Jennings said. “We’ve went away from it, and you seen that tonight.
“We’re doing stuff that fits us, doing what fits our kids, and that’s what you’ve got to do. We’ve got a guy at fullback in Gus Hunter that we think we can utilize, and we’ve also got to be able to utilize Jayden Siegler at tailback. Carson Sanders does a really good job throwing the football for us.”
Weaver
The Bearcats had the night’s toughest draw, playing Alexandria and Piedmont, and it showed through turnovers that helped Piedmont score three touchdowns in a 34-second span.
Alexandria and Piedmont returned interceptions for touchdowns against the Bearcats.
But Weaver had good moments, with new quarterback Connor Hyatt throwing a 29-yard touchdown pass to Junior Allen against Piedmont and Allen taking a quick screen 65 yards for a touchdown against Alexandria.
First-year coach Logan Brooks saw building blocks, calling Hyatt “a baller,” Allen “the best athlete in Calhoun County,” running back Cisco Nira “a dude” and lineman Caden Green “one of the most special people I’ve ever met.”
As for the night’s overall picture, Brooks sees plenty to fix.
“Man, we got kicked in the teeth,” he said. “I wanted to schedule these two teams to see how we stacked up. We did a lot of good things and a lot of bad things, and most of it was on me as a coach. This is my first time doing this, and I put a lot of it on me. They wasn’t prepared.
“I promise you this. We’re going to fix it. There ain’t no other way.”
Munford
Munford failed to score in halves against Ohatchee and Piedmont, and first-year coach Darrell Smith.
“We knew just coming into today practicing game speed was something we were going to have to get used to,” he said. “We wasn’t ready for that.
