Work Session Agenda

  1. National Park Service
    1. Presentation of Junior Ranger Booklet to Council – Representatives announced 20,000 copies of the booklet will be coming and unveiled on May 1, 2021. This will also include Junior Ranger Badges. These will be available at National Monuments. There will be exhibit kiosks and interactive areas set up in the Chamber lobby and at the burn site. They also discussed that they will be coming out with more virtual events soon. There will be lighting event on May 14th at the burn site location. The bus depot is opened on the weekends with visits as well.
  2. National Children’s Mental Health Week
    1. Ms. Sonja George, AHS Mental Health Service Coordinator addressed the mental health needs of children. – Ms. George has asked the city to acknowledge the National Mental Health Week that is coming up on May 5th-May 11th.  She is requesting that green lighting be displayed during this time period to bring awareness to the mental health crisis. Request was made to Public Information Officer Jackson Hodges to possibly make a video to let residents know what the green lights would represent.  Discussion was then held over specifics that would need to be requested from ALDOT to add the lights along Quintard.
  3. Professional Service Agreement
    1. Special Grant Report from Louise Campbell and a Professional Service Agreement renewal – Discussion was held about the what a good job Ms. Campbell was doing and the suggestion was made to renew her service agreement. 
  4. Cash Reimbursements
    1. $20.00 to Lee Willis, Building & Safety, for reimbursement during tornado damage assessment with Calhoun County EMA on April 1, 2021 – no discussion 
  5. Bids
    1. Evaluation of bids for purchase of one (1) Leaf Vacuum Machine; two (2) Shutter Loaders and one (1) Backhoe Loader for Public Works – Discussions on specific purchases were held. 
  6. Reclassification Request
    1. Request that Pay Grade 00 positions be reclassified to Pay Grade 01 – Discussion was held that the summer daycare workers, lifeguards and others in the 00 pay rate to be increased to pay grade 01. This starts at $8.35 an hour an tops out at $12.69. This will allow Parks and Recreation to potentially increase some workers and allow the city to be more competitive in staffing. 
  7. Public Nuisances & Dangerous Structure – Discussion were held that some names and locations appeared multiple times and this is an issue that should be resolved. It was then explained the the property owner was deceased and the property ownership is still in probate. The desire is to declare them as nuance/dangerous so that once probate is completed the city can act on the state of the properties.

  11. Traffic Signs – Discussion was held on the direction of the one way signs would go. Residents have expressed concern over the flow of traffic. 
    1. Discuss installation of a one-way sign in the alley behind ‘A’ Street

  12. City Manager discussion items 
    1. Re-opening of Iron Mountain Road – Discussion of a couple of issues that are still outstanding. Possibly need to postpone to avoid the need to close again. An update will be provided with more details. 
    2. Discussion regarding changing City Hall hours – The proposed hours are from 7:00 am – 4:00 pm. This is to allow people to be able to come prior to work. This new change would go into effect May 3rd.
