Anniston, AL – Anniston Mayor Jack Draper has announced his resignation, effective Friday, May 2, 2025. The announcement came without an accompanying public statement from the City of Anniston at this time.
Mayor Draper’s Comments:
“It has been an honor to serve as Mayor the last 8½ years. I am proud of and thankful for the work we have done.
After much prayer and reflection, I have decided to tender my resignation as Mayor at the close of business on Friday, May 2nd.
When I was reelected in 2020, I anticipated that my term would end as of November 4, 2024. In the spring of 2021, state legislation added one year to our terms. Thus, I didn’t think that I would be Mayor at this point in time anyway.
I need to focus on my family, health, and career. That focus needs to begin now. I am at peace that this is the best decision for my family and me. I pray and believe that Anniston will continue to move forward.”
Thank you for allowing me to serve. May God bless Anniston!
Per Article III of Act No. 404, S.430, Regular Session 1953, the standard succession procedure in such circumstances is for the Vice-Mayor to assume the role of Mayor. In this case, Vice-Mayor Ciara Smith, who also serves as the Ward 3 Council Member, is expected to be appointed as Mayor and serve in that capacity until the next regularly scheduled municipal election.
Following her expected appointment, Smith’s seat on the City Council representing Ward 3 would most likely be filled through an application and interview process conducted by the City Council.
Further details and official confirmations are anticipated from the City in the coming days.
