ANNISTON, AL — Anniston Museums and Gardens (AM&G) will offer a hands-on Pine Needle Basket Workshop on Sunday, November 16, from 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at its Museum Drive location. The class will introduce participants to the traditional art of pine needle basketry, a craft with deep roots in Indigenous cultures.
Led by artist Brittney Hughes, the workshop will guide attendees through the process of creating a coiled basket using longleaf pine needles—a method historically practiced by pre-Columbian Native American communities. Participants will learn essential coiling techniques and will leave with a completed basket of their own. AM&G will also display authentic coiled basket examples from its collection to provide historical context for the craft.
The cost of the workshop is $65 per person, with AM&G members receiving a $5 discount. All necessary supplies, including pine needles, thread, and a basket center, will be provided. The class is open to ages 12 and older, and space is limited to 15 participants.
