The city of Anniston released quite a bit of information this week.  They announced extensions on the dates the warming stations will be open due to freezing temperatures. They announced the procedure for the Point-In-Time (PIT) Count of the sheltered and unsheltered people who are experiencing homelessness in the Anniston community, and finally they asked for donations to be to be distributed to the homeless residents.

The Point-In-Time (PIT) Count is an annual count of the sheltered and unsheltered people who are experiencing homelessness in our community. The count is mandated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the data collected during this annual count can help determine the need for future funding and services.

Trained volunteers will be surveying our homeless population in late January 2022, and we would like to equip those volunteers with care bags to be distributed to our homeless residents.

At this time, we are asking for donated items from the community to help fill these bags. Our goal is to fill 250 bags. Items needed are:

  • Pop-Top Canned Food Items (ravioli, pasta, chili, fruit cups, etc.)
  • Hot Hands
  • Gloves
  • Toboggans
  • Disposable Ponchos/Rain Jackets
  • Baby Wipes/Sanitizing Wipes (no liquids)
  • Toothpaste

Donations should be dropped off before Wednesday, January 19, 2022 to one of the following locations:

Carver Community Center
720 W. 14th St, Anniston, AL 36201
Monday – Friday: 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM

United Way of East Central Alabama
1505 Wilmer Ave, Anniston, AL 36201
Monday – Thursday: 9AM to 4:30 PM, Fridays: 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Furthermore, city leadership asks that everyone please be aware of freezing temperatures continuing throughout the rest of this week and into next week. In light of the weather conditions, the public warming station at the Carver Community Center (720 W 14th St, Anniston, AL 36201) has been extended until Monday, January 17, 2022. The warming station is currently open, and it will now remain open until Monday, January 17th, at 7:00 AM.
For more information on the warming station, please contact the Carver Community Center at: 256-231-7630. If you are interested in donating meals and/or assisting in meal preparations for the warming station, please contact Ms. Diane Smith at 704-904-8774
