MONTGOMERY, AL – Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, along with 76 law enforcement leaders from across the state, has formally requested that Governor Kay Ivey reappoint Leigh Gwathney as Chair of the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles.
In a letter addressed to the Governor, Marshall highlighted Gwathney’s leadership since her appointment in 2019, citing her prosecutorial experience and her consistent focus on public safety. The letter describes Gwathney’s role as central to the parole reforms implemented that year, stating, “The most consequential decision you made during the 2019 parole reforms was placing Ms. Gwathney at the helm of the board.”
Supporters argue that Gwathney’s approach is especially critical at a time when approximately 85% of Alabama’s prison population is composed of individuals convicted of violent crimes. According to the letter, Gwathney has demonstrated resolve in the face of political pressure and has remained focused on the safety of communities and the concerns of victims.
“Reappointing Leigh Gwathney is about more than leadership—it’s about protecting Alabama families from violent criminals and honoring the voices of victims who too often go unheard,” said Attorney General Marshall.
The letter concludes with a collective call from law enforcement officials for Governor Ivey to reaffirm her administration’s stance on public safety and parole reform by reappointing Gwathney as chair.
Governor Ivey has not yet issued a statement regarding the reappointment request.
