WESTBROOK CHRISTIAN 35, MARS HILL BIBL 14: Brody Blevins completed seven of nine for 219 yards and three touchdowns, and Westbrook Christian (2-0) opened Private Class A, Region 4 play with a landmark victory for the Steve Smith era as the Warriors’ head coach.
Smith, who coached Piedmont to five state titles in 17 years there, is in his fourth season at Westbrook Christian. The AHSAA’s realignment for the current two-year cycle split private and public schools for championship play, and Westbrook’s region alignment included Mars Hill, which won the past two Class 3A state titles and four overall state titles in its 12-plus seasons of existence.
Blevins led the charge, also rushing for 105 yards and a touchdown.
Parker Sims caught two passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns, and Blevins threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Sam Legg.
Brooks Whiteside led the defense with 12 tackles and returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown. Jonathan Hersman and Easton Skaggs each had 11 tackles, and Titus Jones had nine.
CLEBURNE COUNTY 42, WHITE PLAINS 6: Jaylen Baker completed 14 of 17 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns, and the Tigers (3-0) opened Class 3A, Region 4 play with a win.
He hit a 64-yard touchdown pass to Cade Shubert and a 68-yard touchdown pass to Karston Williams.
Baker also rushed three times for 68 yards, including a 58-yard touchdown run.
The Tigers also got a 5-yard touchdown run from Silas Hunt and a 2-yard touchdown run from Alijah Ware.
WELLBORN 47, SAKS 0: Mareese Traylor carried eight times for 173 yards and two touchdowns, and Wellborn improved to 3-0 while winning its Class 2A, Region 6 opener.
Quarterback Braden Horton rushed 10 times for 76 yards and two touchdowns and completed two of three passes for 65 yards. Kaden Horton carried six times for 66 yards and a touchdown.
The Panthers have outscored opponents 153-13 this season, averaging 51 points. They averaged 40.7 points a game on the way to a school-record 561 points on the way to the 2019 Class 3A semifinals.
PLEASANT VALLEY 34, VINCENT 14: Braxton Salster accounted for 242 yards in total offense and three touchdowns as the Raiders (3-0) opened Class 2A, Region 6 play with a victory.
Salster rushed 17 times for 158 yards and three touchdowns and completed seven of eight passes for 84 yards.
Kayden Vick rushed 15 times for 85 yards and two touchdowns, and Cooper Dougal led Pleasant Valley receivers with five catches for 62 yards.
Walker Roper had a team–high seven tackles, including two for loss. Salster and Dixon Duncan had six tackles apiece, and Salster had a tackle for loss and a forced fumble.
Zeb Curvin recovered a fumble and had four tackles. Hayden Hardy had four tackles, two pressures and a sack.
OXFORD 28, ST. CLAIR COUNTY 21: Maddox Mims completed 11 of 15 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns, and Oxford (3-0) opened Class 5A, Region 6 play with a victory.
Kamari English rushed for 32 yards and caught two passes for 32 yards and a touchdown. Andre Ford caught a 76-yard touchdown pass.
Oxford gained 263 Total yards to St. Clair County’s 171.
PIEDMONT 52, OHATCHEE 6: Cole Austin completed 16 of 21 passes for 237 yards and three touchdowns, and Piedmont upped to ?-0 after also receiving a forfeit from Jacksonville earlier Friday.
Jacksonville beat Piedmont 34-8 to open the season but had to forfeit the game after self-reporting ineligible player, according to an AHSAA news release.
Austin also rushed for 55 yards and a touchdown against Ohatchee. Jaxson Howard rushed for a team-high 110 yards and two touchdowns, and Eli Johnson caught three passes for 105 yards and two scores.
Noah Bolton and Isaiah Pinto each rushed for a touchdown, and Mason Morrow caught a touchdown pass.
Jayden Siegler led Ohatchee with 77 yards on seven runs and a touchdown.
CENTRAL-CLAY 36, ANNISTON 12: No. 5 rushed for 130 yards and a touchdown, and Central-Clay improved to 2-1 overall while winning its Class 4A, Region 6 opener.
Anniston fell to 0-3, 0-1.
Jer’Darius Hall added 87 yards rushing, and the Vols got 34 yards rushing and two touchdowns from Jaxson Frye.
Jeremiah completed four of six passes for 87 yards, and Hall threw a touchdown pass while completing two of three passes for 36 yards.
Jace Boyd caught a touchdown pass.
ETOWAH 34, HOKES BLUFF 21: Etowah’s Zackery Winston completed seven of 14 passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for a touchdown, and Etowah (1-1) opened Class 3A, Region 6 play with a victory.
Cameron Jenkins rushed 15 times for 103 yards, Brayden Lemons added touchdown runs of one and two yards.
Devin Crowe caught four passes for 58 yards and a touchdown, and Kenneth Boley III caught a 46-yard touchdown pass.
Hokes Bluff’s Dean Morgan completed nine of 18 passes for 62 yards and a touchdown, and he rushed for a score. Brenton Hale rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown.
JACKSONVILLE CHRISTIAN 54, TABERNACLE 14: Dawson Wilkerson amassed 14 tackles, 100 rushing yards and 44 receiving yards. He had a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown.
Brodie Wilkerson added 12 tackles, 167 rushing yards, 104 passing yards and five total touchdowns … three passing and two rushing.
Cade Cates had nine tackles and a rushing touchdown. T.J. Scott added 42 rushing yards, a touchdown and six tackles, and Bryson Dowdey had six tackles, 33 yards receiving and a touchdown.
JCA improved to 2-1.
