Talladega, AL – A marine-related incident unfolded on Wednesday, February 21, around 3:17 p.m., leading to the untimely death of Derek V. Egnor, a 56-year-old resident of Sylacauga. The incident occurred on Lay Lake near the Glovers Ferry boat ramp in Talladega County, sending shockwaves through the community.
Derek Egnor was operating a 1997 Alum Craft bass boat when the accident took place. According to preliminary reports from authorities, the incident took a fatal turn when an unsecured anchor, hanging from the side of the boat, became entangled beneath the water’s surface. The anchor line tightened, causing the vessel to slow rapidly. In a tragic sequence of events, the anchor eventually broke free, catapulting out of the water and striking Derek Egnor.
Emergency services were promptly summoned to the scene, and Derek Egnor was swiftly transported to Citizens Hospital in Talladega for urgent medical attention. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Egnor succumbed to his injuries, and he was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Marine Patrol Division has taken charge of the investigation. As of now, details surrounding the incident remain limited, and the authorities are working to uncover the circumstances that led to this boating-related fatality.
