ANNISTON, AL — The Calhoun County Commission considered a range of county business Thursday, Aug. 27, including a public hearing on an industrial landfill expansion, nuisance properties, law enforcement-related contracts, transportation planning and grant applications.
The meeting included a public hearing regarding an industrial landfill expansion before commissioners moved into elected official and department head comments and regular county business.
Under old business, commissioners considered nuisance abatements involving seven properties in Jacksonville and Anniston. Three additional nuisance cases were listed for dismissal, while a $530 nuisance invoice was presented for a property on New Prospect Street in Anniston.
Eight properties in Anniston, Alexandria, Weaver and Jacksonville were considered as new nuisance declarations.
Other business included the first reading of an alcoholic beverage control application for Northern Express and bid award resolutions for jail inmate supplies and Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office uniforms.
Commissioners also considered a liquor tax penalty waiver for Payless Liquor, a surplus resolution involving a Revenue Department vehicle, a cooperative recycling agreement with Pell City, an FY26 Emergency Management Performance Grant agreement and a local emergency manager salary subaward.
The commission considered an an administrative structure resolution regarding Julie Borrelli and Philip Smith. The measure passed on a 3-2 roll-call vote, with Commissioners Wilson and Henderson voting against the modification and the remaining three commissioners voting in favor.
The split votes stood out from the commission’s otherwise routine consideration of agenda items, although both measures received the majority support necessary for approval.
Additional items included construction change orders involving the Thankful Community Center and jail medical unit, a State Crisis Intervention Program Grant resolution, the FY2027 County Transportation Plan, an Oxford inmate housing contract and an application for a Department of Justice FY26 grant.
The meeting concluded with an opportunity for public comments.
The Calhoun County Commission’s next scheduled meeting is Thursday, Sept. 10, at 10 a.m.
