Calhoun County Commission Addresses Nuisances, EMS Support, and Road Safety Concerns at April 23 Meeting

Calhoun County, AL – The Calhoun County Commission met Thursday morning, April 23, 2026, for its regularly scheduled meeting, addressing a range of topics including public safety, infrastructure improvements, and community concerns.

The meeting opened with an invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance before commissioners unanimously approved the agenda and prior meeting minutes.

Proclamations Recognize Conservation and Legislative Efforts

Commissioners issued a proclamation recognizing Stewardship Week, scheduled for April 26 through May 3, highlighting the importance of soil and water conservation efforts across the county. Representatives from the Calhoun County Soil and Water Conservation District expressed appreciation for continued local support and outlined ongoing educational programs and environmental initiatives.

A second proclamation honored the Calhoun County Legislative Delegation for its unanimous support of Act 2026-349, legislation aimed at strengthening emergency medical services (EMS). Officials noted the act addresses key issues such as ambulance service reimbursement and patient billing protections, which are expected to improve long-term sustainability for EMS providers.

Under old business, the commission approved multiple nuisance abatements for properties in Anniston, Wellington, and Ohatchee where violations remained unresolved. Additional properties were dismissed from the nuisance list after compliance was achieved.

In new business, four additional properties were declared public nuisances, beginning the process for corrective action.

Commissioners approved a bid award for a Rebuild Alabama road project on Old Sulphur Springs Road. The contract was awarded to Vulcan Materials at a cost of $1,106,887.80 following a competitive bidding process.

Two board appointments were finalized during the meeting:

  • Sarah Rutledge was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Public Library of Anniston-Calhoun County Board.
  • Rodney McCain was appointed to serve on the Economic Development Council for an upcoming term.

During public comments, a resident of the Choccolocco area voiced concerns about excessive speeding on Choccolocco Springs Road, citing safety risks for drivers and pedestrians. Commissioners acknowledged the issue, noting prior enforcement efforts and ongoing discussions with the county engineer and sheriff’s department to evaluate potential solutions, including speed limit adjustments and increased enforcement.

Additional updates included:

  • Recognition of recent Earth Day activities and upcoming agricultural education programs.
  • Announcement of a ribbon-cutting and State of the College event at Gadsden State Community College.
  • Promotion of a local event marking the kickoff of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration at Chief Ladiga Landing in Jacksonville.

The meeting concluded with an invitation for public participation at future events and a reminder that the next commission meeting is scheduled for May 14, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.
