Calhoun County, AL – Donoho, Jacksonville and Saks sweep into semifinals of girls’ county tournament; Jacksonville boys advance in Isaac Crook Invitational
Donoho’s girls put on an offensive show without their top offensive player while advancing in the Calhoun County soccer tournament Tuesday, and Jacksonville’s boys lit up the scoreboard in the Isaac Crook Invitational.
Scoring was the theme in the first night of the girls’ county tournament and the Crook Invitational, this year’s de facto county tournament for boys’ soccer.
Site changes were also announced in the Crook Invitational. Fearing bad weather Friday, games will move from home-team sites or Choccolocco Park or Oxford High School’s football stadium, which has artificial turf.
As for Tuesday’s action, Donoho’s No. 2 seeded girls dominated without Erin Turley, who rested up for Wednesday’s semifinal against Jacksonville. The Falcons got five goals from Zoe Christopher, two from Samantha Wakefield and one apiece from Sarah Waggoner, Izzy Romero and Lillie Mae Sherman and beat No. 7 White Plains 10-0 at McClellan.
In other games, Saks beat Faith Christian 3-0, and Jacksonville beat Weaver 3-1. Saks got two goals from eighth-grader Layla Garcia and one from sophomore Dakari Jones. Jacksonville got a goal apiece from Willa Kate Walker, Sarah Sloughfy and Joeh Kim, an assist apiece from Sloughfy and Kim and four saves from Alexis Johnson.
Saks will play Donoho in Wednesday’s 5 p.m. semifinal, and top seed Oxford will play Jacksonville at 5 p.m.
In the Crook Invitational, Jacksonville’s boys won the lone match, beating Weaver 8-0. The Golden Eagles got three goals apiece from Alex Mullins and Trevor Thompson and one each from Landon Garner and John Cooper Hollingsworth.
