Challenger Press Release

RAINBOW CITY, AL — The Challenger Learning Center of Northeast Alabama has announced the launch of its Sojourner Campaign, a month-long fundraising effort aimed at expanding STEM learning opportunities and strengthening the region’s future workforce. Running through December 31, 2025, the campaign invites community members, local businesses, and supporters of science and education to contribute gifts of any size.

Named after NASA’s Sojourner rover—the first robotic explorer to successfully operate on the surface of Mars—the campaign highlights themes of exploration, courage, and taking bold steps toward discovery. Organizers say the initiative reflects the Center’s mission to prepare Alabama students for high-demand careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

“Every contribution made during the Sojourner Campaign strengthens our mission to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators,” said Tony Smith, Chairman of the Board of Directors. “This is more than a fundraiser—it’s an investment in the future workforce and economic vitality of our region.”

As part of the inaugural initiative, all individuals who donate by December 31 will receive permanent recognition on the Sojourner Wall, located inside the Challenger Learning Center. The tribute is exclusive to contributors participating in this year’s campaign.

Funds raised will support a range of initiatives, including:

  • Immersive simulated space missions aligned with Alabama academic standards

  • Workforce pipeline programs introducing students to engineering, aerospace, computer science, and emerging technologies

  • Expanded outreach efforts to underserved and rural communities

  • Equipment, technology, and curriculum enhancements that elevate hands-on STEM experiences

Donations may be made throughout December via the Community Foundation of Northeast Alabama.
