Anniston Mayor Ciara Smith opened the gathering with a powerful message about the strength of community and the importance of gathering in the name of God.

“Today truly proved how deeply loved Chief Waldrep is,” Mayor Smith later told the Calhoun Journal. “His steady recovery is a testament to the prayers and unwavering support, not just from his dedicated crew of firefighters, but from people all over Anniston and across the entire state of Alabama. The City of Anniston is with him every step of the way and we look forward to welcoming him back home soon.”

Mayor Smith then called forward Oxford Fire Chief Gary Sparks and RMC Chaplain Eric to lead the community in prayer. Their words offered strength, comfort, and spiritual healing to all those gathered.

Anniston Assistant Fire Chief Johnnie Phelps spoke to the Calhoun Journal and urged continued prayers for Chief Waldrep. “Please join us by keeping Chief Waldrep in your prayers as he recovers,” Phelps said. “Anniston Fire Department will continue to deliver the highest level of service to our citizens exactly as he expects.”

Assistant Fire Chief Brandon Connell also spoke to the Calhoun Journal, sharing, “Please keep Chief Waldrep and his family in your prayers as he fights to make a full recovery. Chief Waldrep loves this community and its citizens and we will continue to uphold his same standards during his absence.”

The vigil, held at the intersection of 8th Street and Keith Avenue behind RMC’s Outpatient and Radiation Oncology facility, was not only well-attended but filled with a palpable sense of love, support, and hope. It was more than an event — it was a testament to the character of a community that rallies when one of its own is in need.

The gathering followed a Friday announcement from the Anniston Fire Department and Chief Waldrep’s family, sharing news of his medical emergency. Since then, prayers and messages of support have poured in from across the region.

In a statement shared by the family, they asked the community to continue praying:
“Please pray for healing and clarity for our family as we face this unexpected event. During this unbelievably difficult time, all I can do is try to be as strong as you’ve always taught me to be. We love you, Chief.”

Chief Waldrep is known throughout the region for his integrity, dedication, and compassionate leadership. For years, he has served not only as a protector of public safety but also as a mentor and guide to countless firefighters and residents.

Today’s vigil offered a powerful reminder of what community truly means — and how faith, unity, and love can offer strength during life’s most uncertain moments. As Anniston and its neighboring cities continue to pray for Chief Waldrep’s recovery, one thing remains clear: he is not alone, and he is deeply cherished.
